Lady Wolves advance to regionals

By CRAIG HALL

Last year Holdenville won both games in the play-in, bi-district tournament at Heavener to end the Lady Wolves’ season.

With the two teams paired up again this season, the Lady Wolverines hoped for a repeat. That didn’t happen.

Instead, Heavener swept Holdenville in both games to advance to next week’s regional tournament at Kiefer.

Heavener won the opener, 4-3, scoring a run late to break a tie, then grabbed control early and cruised to the 11-2 win in the finale to end Holdenville’s season.

Heavener advances with a 14-12 season, despite playing with only two seniors, McKinley Alexander and Kinley Brand, who pitched the Lady Wolves to both wins over Holdenville. Holdenville finishes 16-21.

In the opener, Heavener held a 3-0 lead until Holdenville scored three times in the top of the fifth to tie the score. The Lady Wolves answered in the bottom half of the inning with the winning run Brand singled, advanced to third and scored the winning run on a grounder by Gracie Morrison to take the lead for good.

Brand pitched all seven innings, allowing only three runs and three runs, one earned, with nine strikeouts and five walks.

Mariana Garcia doubled and was 1-3 with a RBI, Ava Cartwright doubled and went 1-3 with two RBI and a run and Cayleigh McGee doubled while going 1-2 with a run.

The second game ended completely different as Heavener broke open a close game by scoring five runs in the fourth and added the two runs for the run-rule win in the sixth.

Brand got the win again for Heavener, allowing six hits and giving up two runs, one earned, with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Cartwright doubled and was 3-4 with four RBI and two runs, Brand went 3-4 with three runs.
