LeFlore County football teams for the most part edged closer to a playoff spot or clinching a district champion in Week 8 football games Friday.

Heavener, Spiro, Pocola, Panama and Talihina while Poteau and Arkoma made a trip to the playoffs more difficult by losing.

Heavener scored 52 points in the first half and used the reserves on defense for the most part in the second half as the clock ran continuously in a 59-28 win over Okmulgee on the Wolves’ homecoming night.

Heavener is 5-3 overall and 3-2 in district play. The Wolves either need to win next week at Kiefer or at home in Week 10 to make the playoffs for the second straight season. Okmulgee is 0-8 and 0-5.

Sallisaw defeated Poteau, 14-7, for the Black Diamonds’ first win in the series since 2016. Sallisaw is 7-1, Poteau is 5-3 and 3-2 in district play and must defeat Hilldale at home next week or at Broken Bow to continue the Pirates’ streak of playoff runs.

Spiro continued its improbable revival for the 2024 season, winning its third straight district game after losing its first five games, by defeating Atoka, 28-21. Spiro is now 3-5 and 3-2 in district play and broke a tie in the district standings by defeating the Wampus Cats, now 2-6 and 2-3, and Antlers losing to Henryetta.

The Bulldogs close their season with a pair of road games at Henryetta and Antlers. To make the playoffs, Spiro will likely have to win one of those games, although they sit alone in fourth place in the district standings.

Panama is one of the teams that moved closer to a playoff spot in a 51-0 win at Haskell. The Razorbacks are 5-3 and 3-2. The win also broke a district tie with Haskell, 3-5 and 2-3. The Razorbacks could move into a tie for second place in the district and a possible home playoff game with a win at home over Pocola next week before closing at Hartshorne.

Pocola 6-2 and 4-1, broke a tie for second place in the district with Hartshorne by outscoring Hartshorne, 50-21, Friday night. Hartshorne drops to 6-2 and 3-2. Pocola can clinch second place in the district by winning at Panama next week.

Talihina set up a home matchup with Regent Prep with the chance to clinch a district championship by whopping Wewoka, 50-8, Friday. The Golden Tigers are 8-0 and 5-0, the county’s only undefeated team. Wewoka is 1-7 and 1-4. Regent Prep is one game behind Talihina with a chance to tie for the district lead at Talihina next week.

Arkoma had the roughest week of the county weeks. The Mustangs, now 4-3 and 1-2, lost on the road to a previously winless Bartlesville Wesleyan team, 38-8.  Arkoma has a difficult stretch to end the regular season, hosting Webbers Falls next week and undefeated Copan in Week 10.
