Service

Funeral services for Donna Barnes, 86, of Pocola is 10 a.m. Thursday at Rock Island Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Brad Kuhl officiating.

Burial

Burial will follow at Macedonia Cemetery in Pocola. 

Dates

She was born Oct. 3, 1937 in Lasalle, Illinois to Rose (Kehoe) and Tim Decker and passed away Dec. 26, 2023 in Pocola.  She was married to A.J. (Bully) Barnes May 16, 1953 in Yuma, Arizona.

Donna was never able to have kids of her own, but she was like a mother and grandmother to many. After Donna retired from Whirlpool she spent most of her free time with her husband, Bully.  They enjoyed fishing and camping at Broken Bow Lake, where many of their friends and family joined in. Donna and Bully grew the best tomatoes and she was the best cook in Leflore County! She was an avid Facebook user, always posting the funniest, most witty remarks, and was always the first to wish you “Happy Birthday”. Donna was always there for whoever needed her and was the most caring and understanding person, after all, she was married to Bully for 68 years. Donna was more than ready to go meet her heavenly savior and we know she was overjoyed to be reunited with the love of her life and many other loved ones. Her faith in God never wavered. 

Survivors

Donna is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and loved ones.

She is preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Graveside services for Shirley Holter, 78, of Bokoshe is 2 p.m. Thursday at Nubbin Ridge Cemetery in Bokoshe with Brother Vernon Stone officiating, under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.

Dates

Shirley Ann Holter was born April 5, 1945 in Bokoshe to Betty Jean (McCollum) and John Francis Didway and passed away Dec. 25, 2023 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Survivors

Shirley is survived by her son Mike Summers and wife Carla of Bokoshe; daughters Dana Summers of Bokoshe, and Misty Burnett and husband Wayne of Bokoshe; sister Marilyn Ashley and husband Winfred; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; numerous great great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and “lots and lots of friends”.

Preceded by

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry Holter; son, Kenneth Summers Sr.; sisters Norma Shores and Sue Bryant; and brother, Don Didway.

Pallbearers

Pallbearers are John Boy Horn, Bubba Summers, Wayne Burnett, John Ashley, John Didway, Steve Didway, Winfred Ashley, Toby Teach and Kenneth Sears.

Minutes from commissioners’ meeting 12-27-2023

Commissioners’ meeting

The LeFlore County commissioners met in a regular business meeting 9 a.m. Wednesday with Chairman Jamie Oliver presiding. Also present were Vice-Chair Vallard Campbell, Member Cody Covey and County Clerk Kelli Ford.  

The following action was taken by the board:

  1.  Chairman Jamie Oliver called meeting to order.
  2.  Motion was made by Jamie Oliver and seconded by Vallard Campbell to approve the minutes of regular meeting held December 18, 2023. Motion was approved all voting yes.
  3. Motion was made by Vallard Campbell and seconded by Cody Covey to approve claims/purchase orders as presented. Motion was approved, all voting yes.
  4. Bonds: None presented.
  5. Motion was made by Jamie Oliver and seconded by Vallard Campbell to approve monthly free report as presented by the Solid Waste Department and is on file in the office of the County Clerk. Motion was approved, all voting yes.
  6. Motion was made by Jamie Oliver and seconded by Vallard Campbell to approve transfer of appropriations in the amount of $2,600 as submitted by the Hodgen Fire Department to meet maintenance and operation needs. Motion was approved, all voting yes.
  7. Blanket purchase orders. None presented.
  8. New business: None presented.
  9. Contract labor: None presented.
  10. Burn ban: No discussion.
  11. Motion was made by Cody Covey and seconded by Vallard Campbell to approve notice to hold a public hearing regarding closing a portion of old Pocohontas Road, starting approximately at the cross section of newly constructed Pocohontas Road, Wister Oklahoma, traveling approximately three tenths (0.3) of a mile North to North East; And closing approximately one hundred and eighty feet (180’) of old Wards Landing Road from the junction of old Pocohontas Road traveling South to newly constructed Pocohontas Road, Wister, Oklahoma, lying in or adjacent to Sections 32, Township 6 North, Range 24 East. Motion was approved, all voting yes.
  12. Motion was made by Jamie Oliver and seconded by Cody Covey to approve resolution allowing County Treasurer to reinvest surplus of County Health Department funds for January, 2024. Motion was approved, all voting yes.
  13. Motion was made by Jamie Oliver and seconded by Vallard Campbell to award bid regarding the LeFlore County Ballot Printing contract for calendar year 2024 to Midwest Printing. Motion was approved, all voting yes.
  14. Motion was made by Jamie Oliver and seconded by Vallard Campbell to approve resolution determining 6-month county highway material bid award. Detailed information and original bid sheets are on file in the County Clerk’s office. Motion was approved, all voting yes.
  15. Adjourn.

Blue River: 

December 19. Elevation is normal (stable). Water temperature 49°F and clear. (USGS Lake Level) Rainbow trout excellent on in-line spinnerbaits, midges, nymphs, PowerBait, spoons, and worms around brush structure, channels, and rocks. Report submitted by Ethan Lovelace, fisheries biologist in Johnston County. 

Eufaula: 

December 22. Elevation is 4 ft. below normal (stable). Water temperature 45°F and stained. (USACE Lake Level) Striped, striped bass hybrids, and white bass good on crankbaits, jigs, lipless baits, sassy shad, and topwater lures around discharge, tailwater, and below the dam. Blue, channel, and flathead catfish fair on cut bait, dough bait, hot dogs, stinkbait, and sunfish around channels, main lake, river channel, and river mouth. Crappie good on hair jigs, minnows, and spoons around brush structure, channels, creek channels, docks, and main lake. Report submitted by Jake Rowland, game warden stationed in McIntosh County.

Lower Mountain Fork: 

December 22. Elevation is normal (stable). Water temperature 45°F and clear. Rainbow trout good on PowerBait, tube jigs around creek channels, spillway, and below the dam. Report submitted by Mark Hannah, game warden stationed in McCurtain County. 

McGee Creek:

December 22. Elevation is 2 ft. below normal (rising). Water temperature 54°F and murky. (USACE Lake Level) Largemouth and spotted bass good on Alabama rig, crankbaits, in-line spinnerbaits, jerk baits, plastic baits, spinnerbaits, and other around brush structure, points, and standing timber. Channel and flathead catfish excellent on chicken liver, cut bait, and shad around channels and main lake. Crappie fair on minnows, small lures, and tube jigs around brush structure, main lake, points, standing timber, and other. Report submitted by Shay Loudermilk, game warden stationed in Atoka County.

Pine Creek:

December 22. Elevation is 3 ft. above normal (rising). Water temperature 48°F and clear. (USACE Lake Level) Largemouth bass fair on crankbaits and plastic baits around channels and coves. Crappie fair on jigs around standing timber. Channel catfish good on chicken liver around main lake. Report submitted by Mark Hannah, game warden stationed in McCurtain County. 

Robert S. Kerr: 

December 22. Elevation is normal (stable). Water temperature 47°F and murky. (USACE Lake Level) Largemouth and spotted bass good on minnows and plastic baits around brush structure, creek channels, points, and below the dam. Crappie excellent on hair jigs, jigs, and minnows around channels and creek channels. Blue, channel, and flathead catfish good on minnows, shad, and sunfish around channels, main lake, river channel, river mouth, and below the dam. Report submitted by Logan Shimp, game warden stationed in Haskell County.  

Sardis: 

December 22. Elevation is 1 ft. above normal (rising). Water temperature 55°F and stained. (USACE Lake Level) Largemouth bass slow on bill baits, crankbaits, plastic baits, and spinnerbaits around brush structure, channels, and points. Blue, channel, and flathead catfish fair on cut bait, shad, sunfish, and worms around brush structure, channels, main lake, points, and standing timber. Crappie slow on jigs, minnows, and tube jigs around brush structure, channels, points, and standing timber. Report submitted by Thomas Gillham, game warden stationed in Pushmataha County.

Tenkiller:

December 23. Elevation is normal (stable). Water temperature 53°F and clear. (USACE Lake Level) White bass good on Alabama rigs, crankbaits, and jigs around channels and main lake. Crappie good on hair jigs, minnows, and tube jigs around brush structure, docks, and main lake. Blue and channel catfish fair on chicken liver, cut bait, and shad around channels and main lake. Comments: Anglers have had success for crappie by fishing deeper brush in the main lake and around docks. Minnows and jigs have been the baits of choice. Howe wins twice

Pirates run away from Pocola
Howe sweeps two games in Bill Frye Invitational

MANSFIELD, Ark.—Both Howe teams won their opening games in the Bill Frye Invitational Tournament here Wednesday with wins over Western Yell County.

Girls

Howe ran past WYC, 73-20, to improve to 9-0 on the season. Western Yell County is 8-12. The second-ranked Lady Lions play the DeQueen/Elkins winner in the semifinals 4:20 p.m. Thursday.

Boys

Howe’s boys also pulled out a win, although it was much tighter than the girls’ game, winning 60-50. Howe is now 5-3 and plays the DeQueen/Elkins winner at 5:40 p.m. Thursday.

Western Yell County is now 13-10 and drops to the losers’ bracket.
