Poteau’s School Board hired Jake Hayes as the Pirates’ new football coach in a special board meeting Friday.
Hayes has been the offensive coordinator at Edmond Deer Creek for the last four years. Deer Creek went 37-12 over the four years. His offenses averaged 38 points per game vs. Class 6A-1 and 6A-II competion. Deer Creek made the state finals one year, semifinals twice and the quarterfinals once.
He mentored two quarterbacks to 2,500-yard passing seasons and oversaw an offensive unit that produced multiple 2,000 yard seasons.
Hays was named as one of the top 35 coaches under 35 years old. He has also been named an all-state coach by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
There will be a meet and greet 5 p.m. Sunday at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center.
