Student meals discussed in Poteau meeting

By KEN MILAM

POTEAU — Student meals dominated a large part of the discussion at Monday night’s Poteau School Board meeting.

District Dietician Cindy Anson said the Child Nutrition Fund is about $60,000 short of where it was last year, due mainly to unpaid bills. This is despite serving 300 fewer free or reduced income meals this year.

Anson and board members discussed possible ways to increase collections while ensuring that no children go without meals. About 27 percent of students eat breakfast and about 50 percent have school lunches.

She said some families may be unaware they qualify for the free or discounted meals.
