McALESTER – Summer is just around the corner and the Southeast Oklahoma Library System (SEOLS) is gearing up for its 2022 Summer Reading Program – Oceans of Possibilities! The program will run from June 1 through June 30 at all SEOLS locations.
“Each of our 16 libraries will have their own ocean themed programs for all ages throughout the summer,” SEOLS Marketing Coordinator Eddie Gray said. “Events will include story-times, scavenger hunts, reading competitions and more.”
Gray added summer reading programs are designed to help students retain knowledge and skills throughout the summer months.
“We look forward to having a lot of fun and educational events at each of our libraries and the staff has been working hard to make it a fun summer for everyone,” Gray said.
McAlester Public Library Manager Heath Stanfield said he is excited for the theme.
“We are excited this year is “Oceans of Possibilities” because I feel going into a library really is like entering into an Ocean of Possibilities,” he said. “We hope to have a lot of fun.”
Each individual library will have performances by Denise Gard and Professor Universe.
Gard and her famous Border Collies Joey and Kira will be hunting for treasure upon the seven seas. Join them for a program that is so action-packed and full of dog tricks, you’ll wish you were a pirate dog too!
Professor Universe will take kids on a comedic journey through the science of the ocean and the threats it faces. He keeps kids laughing while learning about the amazing systems of global currents, wind, salt, and ice power our seas. They will journey all the way from the coral reefs to the deepest depths, discovering the fantastic life beneath the waves. Ultimately, they will comprehend how interconnected everything is to our ocean.
SEOLS Program Coordinator Shannon Elder said each library decorates and plans different events.
“Each library manager and their staff create unique ways that patrons can enjoy the theme,” Elder said. “A number of libraries may be offering Grab and Go activity bags and craft activities and so much more. Be sure and contact your local library to find out how to register for and participate in their events.”
Elder added Beanstack is available again this year for those that want to participate in fun reading challenges online.
“We are excited to announce that we now provide a way to sign up for the Summer Reading Program online or via smartphone app with Beanstack” Elder said. “Families can register each family member under one log-in/password; an adult caregiver creates the account and then adds each child who is participating. Tweens and teens can create an individual account and independently record their reading.”
Elder said to get started, simply visit your library’s Beanstack Page. You only need to register once for an account, then the system remembers you from year to year. Or you can download the free Beanstack Tracker App for your Iphone/iOS or your Android device. You can log your minutes on the app. It will even tell you when it’s time to visit your local library to claim a prize.
