Talihina advances
Talihina advances to the Clas A-II state football championship game with a 20-14 win over fourth-ranked Thomas-Fay-Custer in Harrah Friday night.
The No. 6 Golden Tigers will play Woodland in the finals 7 p.m. Friday at the University of Central Oklahoma.
Top-ranked Woodland defeated Regent Prep, 60-22, in the other semifinal game Friday. Regent Prep handed Talihina, now 12-1, its only loss in district play when the Tigers were missing several players.
Talihina will be going for its second state championship after previously winning the championship in 1966 and finishing second to Kingston in 1980.
The Golden Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The score stayed that way through halftime before the Terriers, now 11-2, tied the score in the second half before Talihina scored a late touchdown to clinch the semifinal win for a team that did not even have a varsity team two years ago due to low numbers.
Talihina Coach Kelly Gravitt was bragging about this bunch even during that season and his faith has been rewarded.
Woodland is 13-0 entering the championship game. Talihina will attempt to win a state football championship for a LeFlore County team for the first time since Poteau defeated Weatherford in 2019 for the Class 4A championship.
