On the calendar of events for today Funeral service for Norma Davenport  is 2 p.m. at the Heavener First Baptist Church with Chris Davenport and Reverend Joe Haydon Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Heavener Memorial Park, under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener.

Funeral service for Becky Baughman of Mooreland is 10 a.m. Saturday at Mallory-Martin Chapel in Spiro with Reverend Phil McGehee officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery in Spiro, under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Spiro.

She was born June 16, 1927 in Poteau and passed away May 18, 2022 in Mooreland. 

Pandemic-related restrictions on migrants seeking asylum on the southern border must continue, a judge ruled Friday in an order blocking the Biden administration’s plan to lift them early next week.

The ruling was just the latest instance of a court derailing the president’s proposed immigration policies along the U.S. border with Mexico.

A rare northern Michigan tornado tore through a small community on Friday, killing at least one person and injuring more than 40 others as it flipped vehicles, tore roofs from buildings and downed trees and power lines.

The twister hit Gaylord, a city of about 4,200 people roughly 230 miles (370 kilometers) northwest of Detroit, at around 3:45 p.m.

In sports both the Oklahoma and Oklahoma State softball teams won their opening games in regional tournaments Friday.

Oklahoma defeated Prairie View, 14-0, and Oklahoma State downed Fordham, 12-0.

Stephen Curry scored 32 points with six 3-pointers and eight more rebounds, Kevin Looney had a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds, and the Warriors rallied past the Dallas Mavericks 126-117 on Friday for a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals.

The Oklahoma City Dodgers lost at Sugar Land, 6-2, and Tulsa won at Amarillo, 3-0, in minor league baseball play.

On this date in history, in 1881, Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross.

In 1924, 14-year-old Bobby Franks was murdered in a “thrill killing” carried out by University of Chicago students Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb (Bobby’s cousin).

In 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh landed his Spirit of St. Louis monoplane near Paris, completing the first solo airplane flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 33 1/2 hours.

In 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean as she landed in Northern Ireland, about 15 hours after leaving Newfoundland.

In 1941, a German U-boat sank the American merchant steamship SS Robin Moor in the South Atlantic after the ship’s passengers and crew were allowed to board lifeboats.

In 1955, Chuck Berry recorded his first single, “Maybellene,” for Chess Records in Chicago.
