Wolves split Homecoming games

Wolves split Homecoming games with Stigler Friday night as coaches always worry about the distraction Homecoming events can have on the actual games.

There is no way too know if that was the reason, but both Heavener teams played some of their worst ball of the season Friday night in Black Diamond Conference games against Stigler.

The Wolves managed to eke out a 38-36 win, coming from four points behind in the fourth quarter to get the win, while Stigler was in complete control of the last contest, defeating the Lady Wolves, 50-27.

Heavener’s girls are 4-8 and play Poteau on the Lady Pirates’ home court 7 p.m. Monday in the opening round of the LeFlore County Tournament. The Lady Panthers are 4-4.

Heavener’s boys are now 11-1 while the Panthers are 4-8. The Wolves play the winner of Monday’s game between LeFlore and Talihina 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Poteau. Wilburton is at Stigler Monday.

Girls

Playing their first game without Cayleigh McGee, who injured a knee in the win over Talihina Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the season, Heavener had multiple turnovers, fell behind by 17-2 at the end of the first quarter and never recovered.

Boys

Heavener got some late game heroics from Bryce Morrison and Isaac Cook to get the win over the Panthers. The Wolves had a 10-point advantage early in the second half before Stigler went on a 19-4 run.

The Panthers were determined to slow down the Wolves’ leading scorer Landon Thurman and did that, holding him to only four points. The Wolves looked to be in charge at halftime before the Panthers outscored Heavener 19-10 in the third quarter to take the lead going into the final period.

Morrison scored a basket with just over a minute left to regain the lead for Heavener, broke a tie in the final minute by hitting one of two free throws to take the final lead before Cook, who hit a buzzer beater at the end of third quarter for the second time this week, also made one of two free throws for the final score.
