Spiro visits Prague Friday night in the opening round of the Class 2A state football playoffs.
The Bulldogs are 6-4 and finished fourth in District 2A-6. Prague, 10-0, won the district championship in 2A-5, defeating perennial power Vian during the regular season.
The Red Devils started slow in the non-district portion of the schedule before they got rolling in the district section. Prague averages 37.6 points per game while only allowing 11 points per game.
Spiro’s biggest claim to fame this season was a narrow 49-48 loss to undefeated Idabel, the eventual district champions. The Bulldogs’ three district losses were a combined 14 points. This is Spiro’s 50th playoff appearance, which has to be among the tops in Oklahoma.
The Bulldogs are coached by former Bulldog Kyle Fowler, now in his second year at the helm for Spiro. He played during some of Spiro’s more powerful teams back in the late 1970s.
Tomorrow a closer look at the Panama and Wyandotte playoff game.
