Obituary for John Summers

John Columbus Summers of Heavener was born July 25, 1937 in Moyers to John Earl and Mary L. (Shilling) Summers and went to be with the Lord March 28, 2023 in Poteau at the age of 85.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Monday at Heavener First Baptist Church with Brother Brock Hardin, Pastor Tim Painter, and Gary Youree officiating. Burial will follow in Heavener Memorial Park, under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener.
John graduated from Antlers High School. After high school, he served in the United States Air Force for four years. He married Frances Webster in Moore on July 20, 1963. They moved to Heavener in 1966, where they resided for 57 years and raised four children.

He ran Summers Truck Stop and Auto Sales. John was a member of Heavener First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. He lived his life for the Lord and you could always find him reading his Bible.

John enjoyed spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed being in Finley on the family land, where he loved to hunt and fish. He always enjoyed going to watch his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in all of their activities. 

He is survived by three daughters Lisa Summers of Norman, Mary Alma Pickle and husband Bobby of Heavener, and Johnna Carpenter and husband Michael of Cameron; one son Clark Summers and wife Tama of Heavener; eight grandchildren Mary Edwards and husband Tom, Lindsay Painter and husband Tim, Brenn Hardin and husband Brock, Karlee Tucker, Gracie Summers, Havyn Summers, Jeren Pickle and Kanan Summers; seven great-grandchildren Mattox Painter, Moriah Painter, Mason Painter, Maddon Painter, Noah Hardin, Khloe Hardin and Phoebe Hardin; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loved ones, and host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Earl and Mary L. Summers; and his wife, Frances Summers.

Pallbearers are Brandon Higgs, John Antu, Colton Milam, Pat Cogburn, Derek Higgs, Daylan Henderson, Lucas Black and Eddie Freeman. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Don Smith, Joey Clubb, Ray Barker, Jim Bolton, Hank Stripling, Clifford Shilling, Carl Shilling and Ron Higgs.

Viewing is from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; and 9 a.m. until noon Monday.

The family will visit with friends from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in honor of John to Gideon International Bibles.
