Heavener teams sweep 2 from Wilburton

Heavener teams sweep 2 from Wilburton on a night of big streaks, the Heavener boys held off a late Wilburton rally to defeat the Diggers, 51-46, in Black Diamond Conference play Tuesday night.

The boys’ win completed a sweep for Heavener in its home openers after the Lady Wolves won the opener, 43-32.

Both Heavener teams return home for another Black Diamond Conference encounters with Hartshorne Friday.

Girls

After trailing, 15-12 after the first quarter, Heavener’s girls outscored the Lady Diggers 8-0 in the second quarter to take the lead for good. The Lady Wolves sealed the win, outscoring Wilburton, 13-7, in the final period.

McKinley Alexander led Heavener with 13 points. Miranda Cheek scored 19 for Wilburton. Heavener is 3-5 while Wilburton drops to 1-7.

Boys

The second game featured runs by both teams.

Heavener built a 20-9 lead in the second quarter before the Diggers went on a 12-0 run to take a 21-20 lead at the break. The Wolves then outscored Wilburton 15-0 in the third quarter to build a 35-21 lead going into the final period, setting the stage for a run by the Diggers.

Wilburton got its offense ramped up and scored 25 points in the final period, drawing even at 42 with just over 2 minutes remaining. The Wolves’ Landon Thurman hit a paid of free throws and a layup to regain the lead.

Wilburton buried a 3 to pull within a point before Thurman scored, Jackson Clubb made 1-2 free throws and Dalton Semore clinched the victory with a pair of free throws with 5 seconds remaining.

Thurman had one of his better games, scoring 31 points and Nick Lopez finished with 10.

Trey Clark led the Diggers with 13 points.

Heavener improves to 8-1 while Wilburton is 3-4.
