Howe, Pocola boys win state openers

LeFlore County basketball teams went 2-1 at the Class 2A state tournaments in the quarterfinals at the state fairgrounds.

The Howe girls and Pocola boys won their openers to advance to Friday’s semifinals while Pocola’s girls were defeated.

The fourth-ranked Howe girls play top-ranked Dale at noon Friday. Dale downed Okemah, 51-33, in another quarterfinal game Wednesday.

The second-ranked Pocola’s boys will play third-ranked Hooker, a 50-47, victor over Preston in the first round. Pocola and Hooker play at 9 p.m.

Howe’s girls controlled the second half to defeat KIPP out of Tulsa, 53-46. The teams were tied at 20 at the half before the Lady Lions held a one-point advantage after three quarters. Howe outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 19-13, in the fourth quarter to seal the win as the Lady Lions outscored KIPP, 21-9 in points off rebounds and outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 16-5, on free throws..

Slatey Jo Free led Howe with 17 points while Kadynce Delt added 10. Heaven Smith paced KIPP with 18 points.

Pocola’s boys actually trailed after the quarter before taking the lead for good in the second quarter and putting the game away in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Bobcats, 20-8.

Garrett Scott paced Pocola with 29 points, 6-8 Dakotah Terrell added 14 and Austin Hardwick added 13.

In the other contest, Merritt used a 23-13 advantage in the third quarter to build a 47-31 lead after three quarters, before the Lady Indians went on a 17-9 run in the final period for the final 56-48 win.

Pocola was led by Allyssa Parker with 16 points and Lety Parga added 12.
