A memorial service for James “Jim” Dewbre is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Poteau Church of Christ with burial to follow at 1 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home of Spiro.
James Edward Dee Dewbre, known to his loved ones as Jim, passed away Aug. 24, 2023, at the age of 91 in Shady Point. He was born April 8, 1932 and was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Jim was a man of many admirable qualities. He had a wonderful sense of humor and could always bring a smile to anyone’s face. He was known for his generosity, constantly offering a helping hand to those in need. Jim had a caring nature that extended not only to his family but also to his community. His cheerful demeanor brightened the lives of those around him, and his hard-working nature was an inspiration to all.
Jim proudly served in the Air Force for nine and a half years, and his military associations were a significant part of his life. After his honorable service, he embarked on a fulfilling career as a House Parent at Westview Boys’ Home. He also founded The Granite Wranglers Riding Club and served as the Founding Superintendent of Central Texas Boys’ Ranch from 1968 to 1971. In recognition of his contributions, Jim received the esteemed Kentucky Colonel status in 1970. His dedication to his fellow veterans was evident through his role as a Chaplain and Honor Guard at DAV Chapter 63 from 2012 to 2021. In 2023, he was honored as a Quilt of Valor Recipient. Throughout his long life, Jim also shared his wisdom and faith by preaching at various congregations, and wrote “Common Sense”, a series of Christian articles that was circulated across the states of Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas.
In his spare time, Jim enjoyed pursuing his hobbies, which included horse training, dog training, spending quality time with his family, and critiquing westerns. He found joy in these activities and treasured the moments spent with his loved ones.
Jim worshipped at the Panama Church of Christ, finding solace and strength in his faith. It was an important part of his life, providing him with guidance and support.
Jim leaves behind a loving wife, Chris Dewbre; his sons Lee Dewbre, Casey Dewbre, and Ben Baxter; sisters Billie Riley and Janie Cooper; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Jimmie Lee Dewbre (Gray); his father, Jimmie Dee Dewbre; and his sons Scott Dewbre and Doug Darley.
Jim Dewbre will forever be remembered for his kind heart, unwavering dedication, and the impact he made on the lives of those around him. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
