Pirates run away from Pocola

OKLAHOMA CITY—After leading by five points, at the half, top-ranked Dale went on a 16-5 run in the third quarter and got 36 points from Oklahoma University signee Dayton Forsythe in a 63-38 win over second-ranked Pocola to win the Class 2A state basketball championship Saturday night.

Dale ends the season with a 30-2 record and its third straight state championship while Pocola is 28-2, losing only to the Pirates and Idabel, one of the top-ranked teams in Class 3A. The last time Dale lost a game in the state tournament came three years ago when Howe defeated Dale in the semifinals.

After trailing by seven at the end of the first quarter, the Indians outscored Dale, 13-11, to keep the score close at the half. Dale put the game away in the second half, outscoring Pocola, 38-18, in the Indians’ first appearance in the state championship game.

Forsythe was the only Dale player in double figures. He made 13-21 baskets and 8-9 free throws to rack up the 36 points.

Pocola only shot 29.2 percent in the second half after shooting 53.3 percent in the first half.

Senior Garrett Scott led the Indians with 17 points and 6-8 junior Dakotah Terrell added 10 for Pocola.
