Pocola basketball teams fall short

Pocola basketball teams both came up short against larger schools in the opening games of a pair of holiday tournaments.

The Lady Indians suffered only their second regular-season loss in two years at the Tournament of Champions in Tulsa, losing to Class A top-ranked Sapulpa, 63-35.

The Indians lost to host Mustang in the Bank 7 Mustang Holiday Classic, 63-37.

In the girls’ game, Sapulpa jumped ahead 16-4 at the end of the first quarter and outscored Pocola 34-17 in the second half.

Bailey Lairamore led Pocola with 14 points and Allyssa Parker added 14.

Pocola’s girls, now 5-1, play Norman High School in consolation play at noon Thursday.

The Indians, now 3-3, take on Midwest City in a consolation game 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
