Welcome to the Ledger/LCJ blog for today.

In the picture going along with the blog, I got my drone out for the first time in a while Thursday and this is a picture of the United States and Oklahoma flags whipping in the wind at Harvey Stadium in Heavener, looking to the east.

The Heavener Utilities Authority and City Council meet 6 p.m. Thursday at Heavener’s City Hall at 103 East Avenue B.

In the local fishing report, for Wister Lake elevation is 11 foot, above normal and falling, water temperature 68°F and stained. Fishing remains good on largemouth bass, crappie and catfish.

The LeFlore County quilt show is coming June 3-4 to the Kiamichi Technology Center, next to Carl Albert State College in Poteau.

Times are from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The public is invited to come view the quilted creations and attend the free demonstrations. Admission is free. 

In today’s weather forecast, partly cloudy skies again Thursday with a chance of a stray shower or thunderstorm in the LeFlore County weather forecast.

The high will be 88 degrees with a low of 72 degrees.

Sunrise is 6:12 a.m. Sunset is 8:18 p.m.

In the county calendar for today, Service for Misty Catlett is 11 a.m. Thursday at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro with Brother Joey Underwood and Brother Brandon Mooneyham officiating.

Burial will follow at Spiro City Cemetery in Spiro, under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home in Spiro.

Norma Sharon (Elliott) Davenport, 72, of Heavener was born Nov. 28, 1949 in the Independence community, outside of Heavener, to Joe Benny and Derotha (Elder) Elliott and passed away May 17, 2022 in Heavener.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Saturday at the Heavener First Baptist Church with Chris Davenport and Reverend Joe Haydon Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Heavener Memorial Park, under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener.

In today’s top news stories, the white man accused of slaughtering 10 black people at a Buffalo supermarket was scheduled to appear in court Thursday as authorities including the FBI continue to investigate the possibility of hate crime and terrorism charges.

Payton Gendron, 18, livestreamed the attack from a helmet camera before surrendering to police outside the grocery store. Shortly before the attack last Saturday, he posted hundreds of pages of writings to online discussion groups where he detailed his plans for the assault and his racist motivation.

President Joe Biden invoked the Defense Production Act to speed production of infant formula and authorized flights to import supply from overseas, as he faces mounting political pressure over a domestic shortage caused by the safety-related closure of the country’s largest formula manufacturing plant.

The Defense Production Act order requires suppliers of formula manufacturers to fulfill orders from those companies before other customers, in an effort to eliminate production bottlenecks.

More than 2,000 firefighters battling the largest U.S. wildfire dug back-up fire lines and rearranged fire engines around homes in northeast New Mexico on Wednesday in anticipation of a return to windy, dangerous conditions in the days ahead.

After a break in the weather allowed for significant progress on the ground and from the air in recent days, forecasters issued warnings for high fire danger from southern Nevada through parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado starting Thursday.

In state news, 10 current and former students of Mount St. Mary Catholic High School in Oklahoma City and six parents or guardians are suing the private school, alleging it fostered “a rape culture” for more than 10 years.

School officials have known since 2011 that female students have been victims of rape and sexual assault by students, teachers and coaches and done nothing to stop the attacks, according to the lawsuit filed Monday.

In sports, the PGA championship starts today at Southern Hills in Tulsa.

On this date in history, in 1921, Congress passed, and President Warren G. Harding signed, the Emergency Quota Act, which established national quotas for immigrants.

In 1943, in his second wartime address to the U.S. Congress, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill pledged his country’s full support in the fight against Japan; that evening, Churchill met with President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House, where the two leaders agreed on May 1, 1944 as the date for the D-Day invasion of France (the operation ended up being launched more than a month later).
